What does the Bible say about preaching?

A lot.

In fact, there are over 190 Bible verses that specifically mention preaching, and that isn’t including all the times that the Bible mentions things related to preaching, like teaching.

For example, passages like Exodus 4:10-12, 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, and James 3:1 apply to preaching.

These more than 190 verses are also don’t include the many sermons preached in the Bible.

We could learn from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7), Peter’s preaching on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-41), Stephen message before being martyred (Acts 7:2-53), or Paul’s speech in Athens (Acts 17:16-34).

You could even argue that God created the world by preaching (Gen 1:1-26). He spoke it into existence. The world exploded into being with a powerful proclamation of God’s commands.

So, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is filled with preaching. But here’s what the Bible specifically says about preaching.

Preaching in the Old Testament

Ezra

Ezra 6:14

2 Timothy 2:8-9

2 Timothy 4:2-5

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. Titus

Titus 1:3

In his own time he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior (CSB)

Hebrews

Hebrews 4:2

For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard. (NASB)

Hebrews 4:6

those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience (NASB)

1 Peter

1 Peter 1:12

1 Peter 1:24-25

”All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you. (ESV)

1 Peter 3:19

He went and preached to the spirits in prison (NKJV)

For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. (ESV)

2 Peter

2 Peter 2:5

he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others (NIV)

Revelation

Revelation 14:6

And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people (NASB)

If you read all of these Bible verses about preaching, I hope you noticed the dominant theme: Preaching is about proclaiming the gospel, the good news of salvation through Jesus.
