  1. Thanks for the thoughts! This is a well-written post. Another key idea to keep in mind is that good works are only good in God’s sight when they’re done for the right reason — namely, in thanks to God for what he’s done for us in Christ. (Not in order to earn God’s favor, for we already have his favor through Jesus’ merits. Not in order to gain the favor of others, for then we would only be playing a game of manipulation. Not in order to feel good about ourselves, for then the works would really be selfish acts.) For that reason, the gospel is necessary to provide the proper motivation for good works (if they are to be truly good in God’s sight). So again, the gospel and works go “hand in glove.” You can’t have one without the other. Or as the old saying goes, “Faith alone saves. But saving faith is never alone.” (That is to say, works don’t save us. But a genuine faith that trusts we are saved by Jesus work on the cross for us will always produce good works of thanks.) Thanks again for the great article, Brandon! Much appreciated!
